SURGICAL INDICATIONS


In 1991 the (NIH) National Institute of Health considered surgery as the best choice of the obesity, only when other treatments and diets failed. The surgery results increase a lot against the risks of not take the decision of the surgery.

Indications accepted by the NIH

Indications  accepted by the NIH:

  1. Patients with equal or more than 40 kg/m2 BMI.
  2. Patients with BMI of 35 with any morbidity
    • –Heart alterations.
    • –Diabetes Mellitus.
    • –Sleep Obstructive Apnea.
    • –Osteoarticular Diseases or Joint problems (waist, knees, ankles, etc.).
    • –Physical problems as: size of your body, ambulation problems, Poliomyelitis, etc).
    • –Acceptable Surgical Risks.
    • –Age between 16 and 65 years old.
    • –Obesity at least since 5 years.
    • –Good patient cooperation.
    • –Inform about the Surgical Risk.

 

Las Contraindications  are not observed as the indications and this can fail during the treatment:

    • Psychiatric diseases as schizophrenia, psychotic alterations, major depression, suicide tendencies.
    • Suprarenal Pathologies or thyroid disease can be the reason of obesity (Hypothyroidism when it is fixed only you loose no more than 20 pounds).
    • Drug or Alcohol Addiction.
    • Age lower than 16 or older than 65.
    • Family opposition to the surgery.
    • If the patient doesn’t attend the post-operatory treatment.
    • Non-credible spectatives from the results of any surgery (Ex. The gastric band or the balloon make you loose 250 pounds during the treatment).
    • Gastroesophageal reflux or esophageal motor diseases are contraindicated to restrictive procedures as Gastric Band.
